Verdi’s Requiem was often thought to be too operatic to be performed in a liturgical setting, yet contains all a requiem’s prerequisite elements – death, resurrection, mourning, despair, anger, hope and resignation. Four soloists, double choir and orchestra transport this mass of the dead from its traditional church setting to that of the concert hall – an emotional rollercoaster ride juxtaposing formidable fortes with subdued serenity.
