Camille Saint-Saëns: Carnaval des Animaux
Maestro Jules Orchestra, conducted by Jules van Hessen
The explanation before the intermission is in Dutch !
Carnaval des Animaux is a stranger in the oeuvre of Saint-Saëns, a composer with a reputation for being rigid and conservative, not exactly little mr. sunshine. First of all, there's that group of animals, cleverly captured in musical notes. What lies beneath is revealed by Maestro Jules: satire and double entendres. Animals are, after all, just like people. Alongside kangaroos, a roaring lion, turtles, and an entire chicken coop, we hear "Pianists," "Characters with Long Ears," and "Fossils." Are scores being settled here, are composers, politicians, or critics being satirized? And what are wine glasses doing in an aquarium, anyway?
